Add Background Image in Excel

Want a professional, branded Excel sheet? Learn Page Layout → Background (works in Excel 2016+)

Want to make your Excel sheet look professional? In this quick tutorial, you’ll learn how to add a background image or company logo in Excel using the Page Layout → Background feature. Perfect for branded templates, reports, or presentation sheets.

Quick: Add a non-printing background to your sheet

What you’ll learn

  • How to add a background image or logo in Excel
  • Step-by-step process using Page Layout → Background
  • How to remove or replace the image anytime
  • Quick design tips for professional Excel templates

Step-by-step (fast)

  1. Open your Excel workbook and go to Page Layout.
  2. Click Background (in the Page Setup group).
  3. Choose an image or logo from your computer and click Open.
  4. The image appears as a repeating background across the sheet (non-printing).
  5. To remove or replace: Page Layout → Delete Background (or repeat steps to replace).
Why use a background image?

Background images are great for non-printing branding, internal templates, or when sharing files on-screen. If you need printed branding, use a header/footer logo or export to PDF with a placed image on the sheet itself.

Quick design tips
  • Use a subtle, low-contrast watermark or logo so cell content stays readable.
  • Prefer PNG with transparency for logos; JPG works for photographic textures.
  • Keep file size small — large images slow Excel performance.
  • Backgrounds don’t print. For printed reports, insert an image on the sheet and set behind cells or use the header/footer.
